About Me

I am an associate professor at Northwestern University where I teach courses on the performance of race and ethnicity, writing about performance, business writing, and technical writing.

I am a scholar of the way theatre and performance intersect with national, racial, and ethnic identity. I am also a Chicago theatre historian and the co-author of 2 theatre textbooks. Please click on the Theatre Historian tab to see more.

I coach professional communication skills, too. I invite you to look at the Public Speaking Coach tab with my workshops, mini-courses, and coaching offerings. I can help you or the people you work with become stronger public speakers and interviewers.

Since 2004, I have worked as a professional theatre artist and collaborator in Chicago. I most frequently as a dramaturg, but I also design and direct. See the Theatre Maker tab for more. I am an artistic associate with TimeLine Theatre, and I have had the pleasure of dramaturging for TimeLineCourtRemy Bumppo, and the Wirtz Center at Northwestern. From 2016-2019, I was the Director of the Masqueraders at the United States Naval Academy where I directed a production of Much Ado About Nothing, The Infinite Wrench-USNA Style, and several evenings of One Acts.

I have worked for Northwestern University, the United States Naval Academy, the University of ChicagoWright College, Illinois State University, Kaleidoscope Inc., and the Chicago Cultural Alliance.
